Below is an instructional video that I came across. It deals with strumming patterns which may not be as fun as learning a new song, but is very useful if you want to start learning songs faster. The more patterns and ideas that you practice on your guitar, the more often you’ll recognise how a song is being played.

what do those letters and numbers mean?
24 spongebobnik // Mar 16, 2009 at 3:22 pm
Awe, Hell, he’s not going to tell you,
I googled “using a guitar pick.” I get these guys strumming 12 different ways. I want to know how the hell you hold the pick without it flapping or slipping off between your finger.
If I could afford lessons…………

X = mute (do not play)
0 = open note (no fingers on the fret)
The others correspond to the fret number.
Notice there are six — they each represent the six strings, going from lowest to highest (EADGBE)
Pick up a guitar, and it starts to make sense.
Pick up a bible, and it may look like devil stuff.
