Talk to anyone who plays the guitar and they’ll tell you; playing guitar is one of the most enjoyable things that they do. The trouble for someone who wants to experience the rush that comes with playing the guitar is that when first starting out, the learning curve can be pretty steep, which in turn makes it pretty tough to reach the enjoyment stage. Unfortunately, many give up before getting over the initial hurdles. Afterall, it is hard to enjoy the guitar when you don’t really know how to play anything and to top that off – your fingers are sore!

Although, I can’t help with the fingers, I would like to point you to some easy guitar songs that with a “little practice” you should be able to play in no-time. Enjoy!

House of the Rising Sun Guitar Lesson – Animals

This song was written about a about a brothel run by Madame Marianne LeSoleil Levant in New Orleans. Originally opened in 1862, it was shut down in 1874 due to pressure and complaints from local residents.

The best known version was done by the Animals when it became a number one hit in 1962. However, the actual melody for the song comes from a traditional English ballad and with this being the case, no-one can claim rights to this song.

With this song being so well-known, it is definitely a song worth learning and one that can be learnt quickly.

Chords: Am, C, D, F, Am, E, Am

Knockin On Heaven’s Door Guitar Lesson, Bob Dylan/Guns N’ Roses

Written and originally recorded in 1973 by Bob Dylan, “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” can be found on the album, Pat Garrett And Billy The Kid Soundtrack (Bob also played a part in the movie).

Guns N’ Roses did a cover version of the song on their 1991 album Use Your Illusion II.

In my opinion, it is one of the easiest songs to learn and get sounding really good.

Chords: G, D, Am7

Sympathy For Devil Guitar Lesson, The Rolling Stones

The lyrics to this song were originally inspired by the book, “The Master and Maggarita” written by Mikhail Bulgahov. The book portrays the devil as a stylish socialite, or as Jagger put it, a “man of wealth and taste.”

During an interview in 2002, Keith Richards had the following to say about the song:

“Sympathy is quite an uplifting song. It’s just a matter of looking the Devil in the face. He’s there all the time. I’ve had very close contact with Lucifer – I’ve met him several times. Evil – people tend to bury it and hope it sorts itself out and doesn’t rear its ugly head. Sympathy for the Devil is just as appropriate now, with 9/11. There it is again, big time. When that song was written, it was a time of turmoil. It was the first sort of international chaos since World War II. And confusion is not the ally of peace and love. You want to think the world is perfect. Everybody gets sucked into that. And as America has found out to its dismay, you can’t hide. You might as well accept the fact that evil is there and deal with it any way you can. Sympathy for the Devil is a song that says, don’t forget him. If you confront him, then he’s out of a job.”

Verse Chords: E, D, A, E
Chorus Chords: B, E, B, E

Learning easy guitar songs like the ones presented above is a great way to build up your confidence and more importantly your experience with the guitar. Once you get these songs down, you should be ready to go on and tackle more and more of the difficult songs listed on this blog and elsewhere.
