Twist and Shout is an easy song to learn on the guitar. This 50’s rock song contains only 3 chords, so even if you’re picking up the guitar for the first time it should be no problem. Use open D, G, and A chords.

Ranked as number 384 on Rolling Stone magazine’s of the 500 greatest songs of all time, “Ticket to Ride” was released by the Beatles in 1965 on their album entitled “Help”.

Many have come up with theories to exactly what the song’s meaning is. According to Don Short, Ticket to Ride is a phrase coined by John Lennon about the cards indicating a clean bill of health, handed out to Hamburg prostitutes in the 1960s. A different explanation attributes the song’s meaning to the experience of Lennon’s mother leaving the family when he was a child.

Another fun song for the campfire, even if you are beginner you shouldn’t have too many problems strumming this one out. Below the instructional video I have included a Ticket to Ride backing track and free song chord sheet. Good luck!

By Guest Author – Ricky Sharples

One of the big events in fingerstyle guitar playing many years ago was the publication of a music book called “Beatles For Classical Guitar”. This was the world’s first attempt to mix the simplicity of the Beatles’ tunes with the complexity of classical guitar technique.

One of the first things that fingerpicking guitar players who were not trained in classical guitar playing noticed was that the fingerings to some of the tunes were much more difficult to execute than they had been used to. But no pain, no gain. The trickier arrangements indicated how much more musical richness had been found in these more complicated arrangements of familiar songs.

Some guitar players thought that a book of classical guitar arrangements of the work of The Beatles was just a gimmick. They expected that a minimal amount of work went into these arrangements just to produce popular music for the “egghead market”. In fact the songs are all substantial arrangements that many classical guitarists find extremely satisfying to play.

People who loved the Beatles’ music found that the songs had not been rendered unrecognizable in the process of arranging them for fingerpicking. The songs were arranged for guitar players who could read standard musical notation and they were not the kind of arrangements that could be played right through on sight the first time you saw them. The pieces asked you to pay some attention and make some effort. Once you get the feel of the way the songs have been interpreted you can let your familiarity with the songs guide you as you play.

Some guitar players are going to feel cheated by the fact that there are not tabs but the pieces are a bit too complicated to be translated into tab effectively. Guitarists who are used to playing using sheet music will be gratified that the music is not made more complicated by the addition of a tab line.

Here is the list of songs:

Across The Universe
Ask Me Why
Come Together
Cry Baby Cry
Day Tripper
For No One
From Me To You
Hello, Goodbye
Here Comes The Sun
I Don’t Want To Spoil The Party
I Will
I’ll Follow The Sun
I’m A Loser
I’m Happy Just To Dance With You
I’m Only Sleeping
I’m So Tired
In My Life
The Long And Winding Road
Maxwell’s Silver Hammer
No Reply
Nowhere Man
P.S. I Love You
Penny Lane
Something
Things We Said Today
This Boy (Ringo’s Theme)
Two Of Us
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Yesterday
You’re Going To Lose That Girl

You might be surprised by the inclusion of some of the tunes in a collection of guitar solos. So go ahead and try them out.

“”We went to do a job, and we’d worked all day and we happened to work all night. I came up still thinking it was day I suppose, and I said, ‘It’s been a hard day…’ and I looked around and saw it was dark so I said, ‘Night!’ So we came to ‘A Hard Day’s Night.’”

The song is in the key of G and uses open chords for the most part. I have also included a backing track. A fun song to play.

Dubbed by Frank Sinatra as the greatest love song ever written, “Something” was written by George Harrison for his wife Pattie Boyd. Within her book “Wonderful Tonight”, Pattie had the following to say about the song:

“George wrote a song called Something. He told me in a matter-of-fact way that he had written it for me. I thought it was beautiful and it turned out to be the most successful song he ever wrote, with more than 150 cover versions. George’s favorite version was the one by James Brown. Mine was the one by George Harrison, which he played to me in our kitchen. But, in fact, by then our relationship was in trouble. Since a trip to the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram in India in 1968, George had become obsessive about meditation. He was also sometimes withdrawn and depressed.”

Being the only Beatles’ song that was written by George and released as a single, Something can be found on the Beatles’ album “Abbey Road”.

In the below video is a simplified version of Harrison’s classic. Enjoy!

Originally released as the B-side to “Hey Jude”, “Revolution” can also be found on the Beatles’ “White Album”.

Written by John Lennon while he was at a transcendental meditation camp run by the Maharishi, Lennon recorded the vocals to the song while lying on his back in the studio in an effort to have them sound a little unusual.

During an interview with Rolling Stone, John had the following to say about the song:

“I had been thinking about it up in the hills in India. I still had this ‘God will save us’ feeling about it, that it’s going to be all right (even now I’m saying ‘Hold on, John, it’s going to be all right,’ otherwise, I won’t hold on) but that’s why I did it, I wanted to talk, I wanted to say my piece about revolution. I wanted to tell you or whoever listens, to communicate, to say. What do you say? This is what I say.”

A great sounding song that even a beginner should be able to play without too much difficulty. Definiately one of my favorites. Enjoy!

During the famous interview with Rolling Stone in 1971 Lennon had this to say about the song:

“I remember I was just going through this paranoia trying to write something and nothing would come out so I just lay down and tried to not write and then this came out, the whole thing came out in one gulp.”

The video below features only the solo to the song. An easy piece that even a beginner should be able to master.

Recorded on October 12, 1965 for the “Rubber Soul” album and written by John Lennon, ” Norwegian Wood” is the first pop song to feature a sitar.

During an interview in the late seventies, John Lennon had the following to say about the song:

“I was trying to write about an affair without letting my wife know I was having one. I was sort of writing from my experiences – girl’s flats, things like that. I was very careful and paranoid because I didn’t want my wife, Cyn, to know that there really was something going on outside of the household. I’d always had some kind of affairs going on, so I was trying to be sophisticated in writing about an affair, but in such a smoke-screen way that you couldn’t tell. But I can’t remember any specific woman it had to do with.”

A great campfire song, the rhythm can be a little tricky on this tune but overall you shouldn’t have too many problems. So get out that acoustic …

Not terribly hard to play even by the beginner, this song (or at least the main riff) is a must know.

The story goes that while spending the night at Jane Asher’s home in London in 1964, he suddenly woke up with the song running through his head. Instead of going back to sleep he immediately got up and played the piece on the piano.

Not too difficult, it’s definiately a classic worth learning for the campfire.
