If you are new to guitar, you may be asking yourself, what are the first things you should begin working on. In this article, I’ll attempt to explain a solid action plan to get you playing guitar and headed in the right direction.
1. Learn to Tune Your Guitar
Your new guitar will very frequently lose it’s tuning, as the strings and neck of the guitar settle and adjust. Before beginning any practice session, spend a few minutes re-tuning the guitar.
2. Start Working on Beginner Chords
Often people, when new to guitar, aspire to play lead and shred up and down the keyboard. If you stick with the instrument, then one day, you will! But, before you start selling out stadiums, start with the fundamental guitar chords. Chords are the foundation for all types of guitar styles and genre’s of music.
3. Work on Your Right Hand Technique
When you are new to guitar, it often feels very awkward when first using a guitar pick. People often either hold the pick too loosely and end up having it fall in the sound hole, or hold on with a death grip, until they have no feeling left in his or her hand! The trick is to achieve a balance between the two extremes. Grip the pick with just enough pressure to retain a secure grip. Also turn into the strum, in other words, slightly rotate you wrist clockwise for a down strum and counter clockwise on an up strum.
4. Setup a Practice Schedule you can Live With
When first learning guitar, there is a tendency to want to be “good already”. The road to guitar mastery, is accomplished one step at a time.
Setup a realistic practice schedule that you can stick with. Even 15 minutes per day will show real progress over time. Once you’ve setup the scheduled, stick with it and you will get there.
Good luck and happy playing!
