Released as a single in 1977, “Hotel California” is the title song from the Eagles’ album of the same name. The song topped the Billboard hot 100 singles chart for one week in May of 1977. Since the song’s release there have been many interpretations as to exactly what the lyrics are referring to, however, when asked, Don Henley had the following to say about the song’s meaning:

“It’s our interpretation of the high life in Los Angeles” and later he reiterated “it’s basically a song about the dark underbelly of the American dream and about excess in America, which is something we knew a lot about.”

Below I have posted two different videos and a Hotel California backing track that you can play-along with. Let me know how you make out ….

I never played on a guitar before, this is actually my first lesson ever, and it is pretty straight forward and easy to follow. Thanks a million!

  • 21 digialco // May 11, 2009 at 7:43 am

Muchas Gracias, le escribo desde Colombia, realmente una gran ayuda para agilizar el ensamble con mi banda.

  • 22 OMG1cc // May 11, 2009 at 7:43 am

The capo here is on the 7th fret, right? It’s possible that my guitar is a bit out of tune cause there are just a few notes that seem a bit off. I might have capo-ed the wrong fret

This works! I was getting along pretty well and the words “The same pattern” was not working. I figured out what “tigerprawns” posted after I reran the video over 50 times…Still this is a good lesson for this 50 year old guitar rookie who was 18 when this song came out. First time I heard this song was spring break on the way to Panama City Florida…. Don Felder is a genius and the the other two idiots are just idiots.
