By Guest Author – Sammy TwoTongue

A great motivator named Earl Nightingale came up with the this definition of success…

“Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal.”

I like that definition very much! What does this definition mean to you? Let’s take a closer look at what you want to achieve…

Spend a few minutes writing down what “worthy ideal” means to you. It is my vision of perfection…a vision of what I would ideally want & like things to be. It is a vision that I find inspiring and energizing!

If your success with guitar is totally dependant on working towards a worthy ideal, doesn’t it make sense that you first need to figure out what YOUR worthy ideal is? How can you progressively realize something even if you don’t know what it is? Let’s do some exercises to figure your one out…

You must invest a couple hours a day doing the following exercises. They will seriously help you build a mental picture of what your goal is in your head…

Exercise 1:
Try to imagine how you would like to play.Try to imagine what your guitar will look like, sound like, and feel like. What guitar are you a master of? How does your improvising sound? What is going on with your composing? Please write down your answers now.

Exercise 2:
I want you to imagine your ideal guitar playing career. Would you be a master guitar teacher? What about an amazing performing artist? Or another goal can be performing as part of a highly successful band? What do you think about being an in demand studio guitarist? What do you really want to do? You can write down your answers now.

Exercise 3:
Jot down your ideas for a worthy career in guitar playing. Write your goal down in the present tense like you have already achieved it.Try to make it into a one paragraph statement.

Exercise 4:
Invest 5 minutes every morning and night to read your worthy ideal. This will be a factor in helping you stay motivated and focused on the goals that you want to achieve.

Clarity is something that you must have. Without it you won’t be able to start developing an effective plan to work towards your worthy ideal.

You will find that while you are answering the questions that self-doubt will start to creap into your mind. You may doubt whether or not what you write down is even possible! This is normal. Just write down your answers anyway You don’t need to know right now HOW you will achieve your worthy ideal. All you need to do is figure out WHAT it is.

You can improve your guitar skills. You only learn by doing.

If you are new to guitar, you may be asking yourself, what are the first things you should begin working on. In this article, I’ll attempt to explain a solid action plan to get you playing guitar and headed in the right direction.

1. Learn to Tune Your Guitar
Your new guitar will very frequently lose it’s tuning, as the strings and neck of the guitar settle and adjust. Before beginning any practice session, spend a few minutes re-tuning the guitar.

2. Start Working on Beginner Chords
Often people, when new to guitar, aspire to play lead and shred up and down the keyboard. If you stick with the instrument, then one day, you will! But, before you start selling out stadiums, start with the fundamental guitar chords. Chords are the foundation for all types of guitar styles and genre’s of music.

3. Work on Your Right Hand Technique
When you are new to guitar, it often feels very awkward when first using a guitar pick. People often either hold the pick too loosely and end up having it fall in the sound hole, or hold on with a death grip, until they have no feeling left in his or her hand! The trick is to achieve a balance between the two extremes. Grip the pick with just enough pressure to retain a secure grip. Also turn into the strum, in other words, slightly rotate you wrist clockwise for a down strum and counter clockwise on an up strum.

4. Setup a Practice Schedule you can Live With
When first learning guitar, there is a tendency to want to be “good already”. The road to guitar mastery, is accomplished one step at a time.

Setup a realistic practice schedule that you can stick with. Even 15 minutes per day will show real progress over time. Once you’ve setup the scheduled, stick with it and you will get there.

Good luck and happy playing!

Here are a few guitar playing tips designed to help you improve your playing skills. So let’s get started…

1) The first guitar playing tip is to use good posture while playing the guitar

You should sit up straight in an armless chair. If the chair has arms, you will not be able to hold the guitar properly for playing. Sit up straight to protect your back.

If you get a backache after a bit of playing, you will realize how having good posture while playing the guitar is so important.

2) The next guitar playing tip is to hold the pick firmly but not too firmly.

If you do not grip the pick firmly enough, you may lose it during a vigorous bout of strumming! But if you grip it too tightly, you may find your whole arm getting tired. Middle of the road is the best guitar playing tip I can give you where pick grip is concerned.

3) Choosing the right pick is another guitar tip that is important.

Picks come in finger and flat styles. Most guitarists use a flat one. They also come in three different levels of flexibility.

Several professional guitarists have given me the advice of getting the softest, flabbiest pick I can find for learning to keep up with fast strumming. It’s easier on the arm. Flabby picks are harder to use, however, if you are trying to pick out individual strings, as in adding a bass line, or flat-picking.

After some practice with a soft pick, you will probably want to move on to a firmer one. A final guitar playing tip about picks is that the firmest picks make the richest sounds.

4) Here is a guitar playing tip – learn to play arpeggios.

It’s fun, great for old folk songs, and sounds beautiful! You won’t be able to use a pick, though. Finger the chord. Now, pick the bass note of the chord with your thumb. You can use a thumb pick for this, however, it works just fine to use your thumb. You will grow a little callus there which will make it easier.

Now use your index finger to pluck the third string. Next, pluck the second string with your middle finger. And then pluck the top string with your ring finger. You’ve picked four notes.

If you repeat the sequence, giving each note the timing of an eighth note, you will fill a measure of a song written in four/four time. This guitar playing tip will make people sit up and take notice, but it does require practice, and calluses, to play this way. Try playing the strings in different order, and alternate bass strings.

5) A final guitar playing tip involves the chord D.

While playing the D chord, try adding your pinkie finger to the chord at the third fret. This new chord is often called “D-suspended” or “D-sus.” Then play D again. Now try lifting your middle finger so that the top string of the chord is open. And back to D again.

You can do the same thing with the A-chord, but have to do the change on the second string. Up one fret to the third makes A-sus, and you can also lift that finger to go down a step on that second string. C-suspended requires you to go up a half step on the fourth string. G-suspended requires you to do it on the fifth string. Learning suspended chords is a guitar playing tip you’ll find yourself using when you play contemporary songs.

I hope you’ve found these guitar playing tips helpful. It’s important to remember that the best way to improve your guitar playing skills is to practice, practice, practice. Good luck!

You have decided to learn how to play a guitar…excellent choice…now what?

The first thing to consider is how you are going to learn. There are three highly popular methods, not each is equal to the other. You could teach yourself, hire an instructor, or learn online. Read below and I will review each of these options for you.

The least expensive option is teach yourself, this is where the benefits end. This can be a very long task, it will take at the very minimum of a year to be comfortable playing the guitar and in that time you will most likely tech yourself bad habits that will hamper your continued growth.

Many have succeeded in teaching themselves to play guitar, most will tell you they wish they had taken a different more efficient route.

The most common method and most expensive method is to hire a private instructor. While being a very effective way to learn guitar it will be costly. On average, private instructors charge $30.00 per half hour and you are going to need 6 months of instruction before you can consider yourself a decent player.

Let’s do the math: 6 months is 24 weeks @ $30.00 a lesson and 1 lesson per week = $720.00…..OUCH

The third option is to learn online. This method overcomes both major flaws in the previous 2 methods. Most online course are a one time very affordable fee for unlimited access to the course material. The fees for these programs are usually less than the cost of 2 months of private lessons. As these lessons are recorded with professionals you will not learn the bad habits that come with teaching yourself.

As you can see, to learn how to play a guitar can happen in numerous ways. You must decide which option is going to work best for yourself. I personally prefer the online lessons as they allow me to work at my own pace and still afford to purchase the Gibson I saw in the window the other week.

Everyone wants to become the next Guitar Hero. But before you reach that, it is always wise to become a better guitar player first! Here are 10 tips to help you.

1. Always trim your fingernails before you start playing. It affects the way the notes and chords sound when you strum.

2. Practice the skills and techniques you picked up after each lesson. Never hurry into the next. Master the first before you move on to the next lesson. This is applicable especially for beginners.

3. Tune the guitar each time before you play. It is embarrassing if you simply pick it up and start fingering away without noticing that your notes are out of tune. If manual tuning is too tedious, use an electronic tuner.

4. Pay attention to your notes. Do not underplay or overplay them, especially in overplaying. Discerning audience can recognize that and immediately notice the redundant “sounds”. This can also hamper your growth.

5. Develop your own style. While it is good to be inspired by your favorite musicians as a beginner, you cannot always remain as one. Every musician has his or her unique techniques of playing the guitar.

6. Kick bad habits. Ask a few experienced guitarists to observe your sitting posture as well as playing methods. You will be surprised at how many mistakes and bad habits you have picked up as a beginner. Do not let them get entrenched and affect your growth.

7. Change your strings when the guitar simply cannot stay in tune. If it is out of tune even with new strings, adjust the intonation.

8. Do not drink before you play. Alcohol will make you perform poorly. Do not be deceived by your favorite rock stars who always seem drunk or high on drugs when they play. The truth is, no one becomes a better guitar player by getting high on drugs or alcohol.

9. Plan what you are going to play. Learn the music theory behind the chords and understand how it fits into the song you are playing. Many people only memorize the fingerings and chords but fail miserably when asked to explain how they fit in. When you master these basics, you will not only be able to play any song well, you will even be able to write your own song.

10. Always remember that the song always precedes the play. So do not let your guitar lead the song. Allow the tune and lyrics of the song to blend well with your playing and synchronization will be perfect!

Have you been noticing lately that after you have put on a fresh set of guitar strings, and rock out your favorite guitar riffs for awhile, that the strings just don’t hold their tune very long? The reason for this is because new strings need to be properly stretched out. There are a few extra steps that need to be taken when you change your guitar strings.

Proper Steps to Stretching Your Guitar Strings

1. After you have finished putting on the new strings, start with the 6th string (Low E) and tune it to the proper pitch.

Helpful Tip: When you tune a brand new set of strings, it is suggested that you use an electric guitar tuner. This especially goes for beginners who are not able to recognize the correct tone by ear.

2. Next, take your fretting hand (left hand) and hold the string down at the first fret.

3. Now take your your right hand and gently pull up on the string at the fourth or fifth fret. Keeping this same method, start to work your way up the fretboard. At the same time you should keep your hands about three to four frets apart.

4. Once you have gone all the way down the sting, it will be out of pitch. You need to then return it back to the proper pitch and repeat the same process a few times.

5. After you have got the Low E string in tune, move on to the 5th string and so forth.

The gage of your strings will determine just how many repetitions will be needed. However, after each pass you will notice that the string will hold its tune longer each time. Once the pitch remains constant and accurate, this will let you know that you have properly stretched the string
